Google denies plans for facial recognition application

Captioned article via Darren Nathan

Picasa already has facial recognition technology built in and a store of photos of many of us from every perceivable angle. How difficult would it be for them to apply this technology to a Smartphone app?

Have you ever wondered why Google has a free offline/online photo album app in the first place. It's hardly inline with their core business strategy unless their core business strategy is finding out everything there is to know about YOU.

Google-is-watching-you-google-

If they wanted, Google could use apps they already have to log today what you read, what you write, what you say and who you do it with, (write and say that is). They could record where you go or where you are right now to within a couple of feet. What is there to worry about?

Just so you know how crazy I really am, in the not too distant, a girl will be able scan a bar full of men with her Smartphone and an app will tell her which guy drives a supercar, has a bank balance in excess of a mill and his condom size. Guys will be able to scan a room full of women and an app will tell them which girls have a bra size minimum of 38C and lots of male contacts. Oh, and hasn't bought penicillin recently!!! Of course police could use the same technology to see who in the rooms got a police record, or is a friend of Public Enemy No 1.

New technology in the right hands is a good thing, so long as those hands are mine!!!!!

Laurent Gbagbo home Attacked and State TV Station Taken Over by Forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the int. recog. president of Ivory Coast

Forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized president of Ivory Coast, attacked the residence of disputed incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and took control of state-run TV early Friday morning, a spokesman for Ouattara told CNN.

Gbagbo's residence is near the state-run television station taken over by Ouattara forces in the early morning hours Friday, said Patrick Achi, the Ouattara spokesman. Gbagbo apparently was not there.

The takeover occured less than three hours after a Gbagbo spokesman appeared on the same network declaring that Gbagbo had no intention of leaving the presidential palace, according to a witness who saw the broadcast. The presidential palace is not Gbagbo's personal residence and is located elsewhere.

Gbagbo has refused to cede power after a disputed November election.
The takeover of the government network, which had previously been accused of inciting violence against protesters opposed to the Gbagbo government, came as Ivory Coast's internal war appeared to enter a decisive and final phase, with forces loyal to Ouattara making a final push to oust a defiant Gbagbo.

Ouattara on Thursday declared a curfew in Abidjan as forces loyal to him moved closer to taking control of the city. The curfew, Ouattara said, will remain in effect until Sunday. Also Thursday, Ouattara's interior minister announced on radio that the air and sea borders of the country would be sealed until further notice.

The curfew, however, did not seem to be universally recognized as Abidjan residents reported hearing sounds of heavy gunfire Thursday night.

"It seemed there was a battle going on," said Diallo Ibrahim, adding that the "heavy gunfire" appeared to subside by midnight Thursday.

Ibrahim, an accountant, said he watched the Gbagbo spokesman appear on TV and declared that Gbagbo would not leave the presidential palace. After the announcement, however, the station went dark, Ibrahim said.

Ouattara's spokesman, Patrick Achi, told CNN earlier Thursday that rebel forces were patrolling some streets of Abidjan and were fast closing in on Gbagbo.
It will be only "hours, maybe days" before Gbagbo falls, Achi said. "The army does not want to fight for Laurent Gbagbo."

Residents in Abidjan told CNN that people were frightened at the prospect of an all-out war and were huddled in their homes Thursday. At sunset, they could still hear the sound of gunfire outside. Smoke could be seen in some parts of the city.
"We can tell the fighting has gone to another level," said one resident who did not want to be named because of security reasons. "We are watching to see what will happen next."

Humanitarian agencies warned Abidjan is on the brink of catastrophe.
"The international community must take immediate steps to protect the civilian population," said Salvatore Sagues, Amnesty International's researcher on West Africa.

Choi Young-jin, head of the United Nations' mission in Ivory Coast, said on France Info radio that U.N. peacekeepers have taken the place of army and police who abandoned Gbagbo on Thursday.

Choi said that the siege laid on the Abidjan hotel where Ouattara was confined has been lifted.

Ouattara was recognized as the winner of a November presidential election but had been holed up in the U.N.-protected Golf Hotel since then as the political stalemate led to escalating violence and turmoil.

Meanwhile, Gbagbo's army chief, Gen. Philippe Mangou, asked for asylum at the residence of the South African ambassador, the South African government said Thursday. Achi said it was a sign that the armed forces now stand fully behind Ouattara.

Republican Forces wrested control of much of the capital, Yamoussoukro, and other key cocoa-producing and port cities earlier in the week before marching to Abidjan, the commercial center of Ivory Coast.

Ouattara issued a statement saying that despite numerous attempts to end the violence, Gbagbo had refused. He said Ivory Coast is now at a turning point in its history and called for unity.

"In order to end the escalating violence in our country, the Republican Forces of Ivory Coast have started to put in place, in accordance with their missions, the protection of people and their property against the militia men and mercenaries paid by Laurent Gbagbo," Ouattara said.

"They have decided to restore democracy and to respect the vote of the people," he said. "In every city where they went, they were greeted in jubilation."
Human rights agencies have documented the deaths of 462 people -- some in heinous fashion -- and the displacement of more than 1 million from their homes.
Many residents in Abidjan fear Gbagbo will not go down easily.

Koffi Kouakou, a citizen of Ivory Coast who now lives in South Africa, said his family members were stocking up on food and waiting for the battle they feel is inevitable.

"Everybody is calling it the battle of Abidjan," said Kouakou. "There will be a battle and people will be killed, unfortunately. Nobody knows when it is going to happen but it will happen soon."

Concerned about the rising tide of violence, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Wednesday to impose sanctions on Gbagbo, his wife and three associates, as well as give U.N. peacekeepers more authority to protect civilians.

The U.N. resolution demands that Gbagbo step down immediately and that all state institutions, including the military, accept Ouattara as president. It also authorizes U.N. peacekeepers "to use all necessary means to carry out its mandate to protect civilians under imminent threat of violence."

The resolution imposes targeted sanctions and travel bans on Gbagbo, his wife, Simone, and three others: Desire Tagro, Pascal Affi N'Guessan and Alcide Djedje.
The resolution accuses all five of "obstruction to the peace and reconciliation process" and of rejecting the legitimate election of Ouattara. All but Laurent Gbagbo are accused of "public incitement to hatred and violence."

NOTE ; Today is April First  ! - Sorry for those who took this news too seriously !

Lanka e News Editor Benette Rupasinghe remanded until April 7th - Another Dog Work by Dictator Mahinda's Regime !

Arrested news editor of Lanka e News senior journalist Benett Rupasinghe has been remanded until April 07.

Mr. Rupasinghe was produced before Kaduwela magistrate Jayaki de Alwis this afternoon (Mar. 31).

He was arrested by Wellampitiya police earlier in the day on charges of making threatening calls and threatening at gunpoint the brother of a suspect in the arson attack on the website’s Malabe office.

The journalist is also accused of concealing the truth to a state official.

A team of lawyers appeared on behalf of him at the court, and one of them, attorney Maithri Gunaratne, accused police of making suspects out of the aggrieved party in the arson attack, at the instigation of an interested party.

The lawyer quoted March 27 issue of ‘Dinamina’, which said the mastermind behind the attack was to be arrested soon.

He asked the court that the 68-year-old suspect be given bail on any condition.

Making submissions, Wellampitiya Police Inspector OIC Ranjith Samaranayake and SI Chandradasa Meegahawatte rejected the accusations against police.

When the magistrate inquired about the pistol the suspect had reportedly used to issue his threats, police said they were yet to find the weapon.

The magistrate ordered the suspect be remanded, and be given medical treatment if necessary at the prison hospital.

The team of lawyers that appear for Mr. Rupasinghe also include Shiral Lakthilake, Gunaratne Wanninayake, Namal Rajapaksa, Manjula Pathiraja, Bandara Ekanayake and Nuwan Jayawardena.

Vaas and Randiv called up as injury cover for WC final !

Injury concerns over Muttiah Muralitharan and Angelo Mathews have forced the Sri Lankan team to call up Chaminda Vaas and Suraj Randiv as standbys ahead of the World Cup final against India on April 2. Vaas and Randiv will reach Mumbai on Thursday evening, and will be available for an emergency swap into the side if necessary, pending approval from the ICC.

Muralitharan has struggled with niggles through the course of the tournament, including a hamstring injury, a side strain, a troublesome knee and a groin issue. There was speculation that he would be rested for the semi-final against New Zealand in a bid to allow him time to be fully fit for the final. Muralitharan, however, played in the semi-final in Colombo, despite not being in the best physical condition. The final, if he plays in it, will be Muralitharan's last international game.

Trevor Bayliss, the team's coach, was confident about Muralitharan's availability for the game. "Chances are good that Murali will play," he said. "He completed ten overs in the semi-final, and such is the character of the man that he will play even with discomfort."

Mathews left the field during the semi-final with a minor injury to the thigh when Sri Lanka were fielding, and was visibly hampered for movement when he later came out to bat with a runner. Mathews has played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's campaign, both as a back-up seamer and in the middle order, and his versatility will be tough to substitute.

Left-arm seamer Vaas, 37, last played an last international game in July 2009, and hasn't featured in an ODI since August 2008. He was contemplating retirement following his omission from the original World Cup squad. Offspinner Randiv was a regular member of Sri Lanka's limited-overs' side last year, but missed out on a World Cup spot to Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis, who were picked ahead of him as the spinners to support Muralitharan.

But What we hope is that both Muttiah Muralitharan and Angelo Mathews will be fit to play as they are the most valuable players (other than Kumar, Mahela and Lasith Malinga) that no body could ever do what they contribute as a player to the team.

Songkran2

Is that long enough for you?

It seems to me that additional days are added to the traditional 3 day festival every year. Also, in previous years I'm pretty sure Pattaya celebrated Songkran the week after Bangkok in order to attract Bangkokians down to Pattaya for Songkran part 2. This year the dates appear to clash. I guess I'll only really know when I get a bucketful in my face!!!! Roll on May... I know, grump, grump, grump.

............................................

Other Bowlers

Kulasekara          -  5 Wickets
Thisara Perrera     -  6 Wickets
Rangana Herath      -  3 Wickets

Sri Lanka might play Thisara Perrera instead of Chamara Silva as Thisara's Performance against India is excellent in past. Kulasekara also might come in for Rangana, if the pitch looks good for seamers but it's better to go with 3 full time spinners.

*********************************************

Indian Team

Top Batsmens

Sachin Tendulkar   -  464 Runs
V Sehwag           -  380 Runs
Yuvraj Singh       -  341 Runs
G Gambir           -  296 Runs

M S Dhoni          -  150 Runs
S Raina            -  74  Runs
Y Pathan           -  74  Runs

..............................

Other Bowlers

R Aswin            -  4 Wickets
A Nehra            -  3 Wickets
P Chawla           -  4 Wickets

They are likely to play with same team that played with Pakistan but sometime Aswin
may come in for Nehra and sometimes Y Pathan for Raina.

So What is the difference between two ?

Not Much at all but in batting India is bit ahead of Sri Lanka considering that they have 4 inform batsmen  where as Sri Lanka has only 3 but in Bowling Sri Lanka is far ahead with wicket taking bowlers (even the part time 2 bowlers are wicket takers!) but Sri Lanka will have a problem If Anjelo doesnt play... because neither Thisarra nor Vaas / Randiv could do what he does with both bat and bowl for the team in very crucial moments... but the team that make few mistakes compared to the other will lift the World Cup 2011.

Libya Dictators regimes Foreign Minister quits and Flees to Britain !

Moussa Koussa, the Libyan foreign minister, has defected to the United Kingdom, the British foreign ministry has confirmed.

The ministry said in a statement that Koussa had arrived at Farnborough Airport, in the south of England, on a flight from Tunisia on Wednesday.

"He travelled here under his own free will. He has told us that he is resigning his post. We are discussing this with him and we will release further details in due course," the statement said.

"We encourage those around Gaddafi to abandon him and embrace a better future for Libya that allows political transition and real reform that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people."

It added that Koussa was one of the most senior officials in Gaddafi's Brutal Regime with a role to represent it internationally, which is "something that he is no longer willing to do".

Tunisia's TAP news agency said on Monday that Koussa had crossed over into Tunisia from Libya.

A Libyan Regime spokesman in the Libyan capital Tripoli had earlier denied speculation that he had defected.

"He is on a diplomatic mission," Mussa Ibrahim, the spokesman, said. He gave no further details.

Earlier on Wednesday, the British government announced the expulsion of Libya's military attache and four other diplomats in protest and for intimidating opposition groups in London.

A government source quoted by Reuters said the diplomats, believed to be supporters of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, have been given seven days to leave.

William Hague, the British foreign minister, told legislators the move was to "underline our grave concern at the regime's behaviour".

"... we have today taken steps to expel five diplomats at the Libyan embassy in London, including the military attache," he said in parliament on Wednesday.

"The government also judged that, were those individuals to remain in Britain, they could pose a threat to our security."

Hague also announced that a British diplomatic mission led by senior diplomat Christopher Prentice had visited the freedom fighter-held city of Benghazi earlier this week, and met key opposition groups including Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the head of the pro democracy Libyan National Council.

Daniel Vettori retires from Twenty20s !

Kivi Captain Daniel Vettori has announced his retirement from Twenty20 internationals. He had earlier decided to step down as New Zealand captain following the World Cup, and his one-day plans remain unclear, though he is committed to playing Tests.

Vettori has captained the side in 32 Tests, 82 ODIs and 28 Twenty20 internationals. Taylor has stepped in as captain in Vettori's absence in recent times, but New Zealand Cricket are yet to announce a full-time successor.

India will play Sri lanka in World Cup Final !

India were looking for 320+ initially but they had to satisfy with 260 as they started to loose wickets one after another in quick succession.

Sehwag manage to get 21 from Pakistans most reliable pace bowler Gul who was too expensive in this match (for the first time in the tournement). Sehwag's thundering 38 (of 32) batting was ended by Wahab Riaz by getting him trapped in front of the wicket. Then the run rate started to come down sharply as non of the other batmens were able to score at least run a bowl.

Yuvaraj went for duck in the first bowl he face of Wahab Riaz soon after Kohli got out. India were struggling at one stage to get atleast 250 but Raina and their lower order bowlers managed to lift the score to 260/9.

Wahab Riaz took 5 wickets while Ajmal 2 wickets with one for Hafeez. Sachin Tendulkar manage to get 85 having being dropped by pakistan fielders in several occassions though.

It was a gettable total for Pakistan on a wicket which was flat. They went with a good run rate initially with 70 for 1 but Nehra and his bowling colleagues built the pressure and made it difficult to score freely for pakistan players which brought the downfall of their run chase.

Misbah Up Haq (56) played a one man show to rescue his team, though he played almost till the end, but his scoring rate wa slow... Ultimately Pakistan were bowled out for 231 with 29 run victory for India making them to the Final on Saturday at Mumbai with Sri lankan Lions !
